Main Project Features

The study aims to support ESCAP member States, particularly Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), in enhancing their operational connectivity through the development of sustainable road transport corridors. It focuses on strengthening policy and technical frameworks to promote low-carbon, resilient infrastructure and efficient cross-border operations. Key areas of the study include: (i) Developing a regional framework to guide the planning and implementation of sustainable road transport corridors; (ii) Identifying best practices and case studies on transit arrangements and corridor development, with a focus on road freight transport; and (iii) Updating the Regional Strategic Framework for the Facilitation of International Road Transport to reflect evolving technologies, environmental priorities, and the needs of LLDCs.

Activities Performed

Conducting a comprehensive desk review of the challenges and opportunities in enhancing operational connectivity for LLDCs across the Asian Highway network. Analysing road transport corridors from the perspective of sustainability and regional integration, with particular emphasis on transit dependence, infrastructure quality, and border crossing inefficiencies. Examining case studies and international best practices in the development of sustainable and smart transport corridors, including the application of low-carbon and digital technologies. Contributing to the update of the Regional Strategic Framework for the Facilitation of International Road Transport (RFF) by incorporating emerging trends such as green corridors and intelligent transport systems. Preparing a draft Regional Framework on Sustainable Transport Corridors and a consolidated study report.
